In the framework of the ACT-SAF Workshop, organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Clean Flight program, the SAF 2024 Public-Private Agreement was officially presented, a key initiative to promote the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in Chile.
This agreement, promoted by the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications and the Energy Sustainability Agency, seeks to promote concrete actions and projects that position Chile as a leader in sustainability in the aeronautical sector, including the goal of producing the first liter of SAF in the country.
The Technological Development Unit (UDT) of the Universidad de Concepción is directly involved in this milestone through project ID23i10321: “Aviation fuel from synthetic hydrocarbons derived from residual plastics”, led by Dr. Cristina Segura and co-financed by ANID. This project will contribute to the challenge of producing the first liter of SAF in Chile, demonstrating how the valorization of plastic waste can be integrated into innovative and sustainable solutions for aviation.
The SAF 2024 Agreement has the backing of 48 companies and organizations from across the SAF value chain, who made commitments to advance the development of these fuels, the creation of infrastructure, and the promotion of related educational programs.
The launch underscored the importance of public-private collaboration to accelerate the transition to sustainable aviation, demonstrating that working together is essential to meeting national and international climate goals.
