The first session of the lecture series “Innovation in Los Angeles” was held at the Los Angeles Campus, and was organized by the Los Angeles Innovation and Development Center Project of the Vice Rector’s Office for Research and Development of the Universidad de Concepción.

On this occasion, Dr. Cecilia Fuentealba Becerra, researcher and project engineer at the Technological Development Unit UDT, gave a presentation entitled “Use of wood in the development of new materials: unconventional fibers for the construction industry”.

In her own words, the idea was “to make the UDT known in terms of its areas of work and the infrastructure it has, so that it would be known by those who might have some collaboration. In addition, I focused the talk on a development that I made and that in some way is successful, and that reached the interest of a company that is accompanying you and the final point is to license the development of the company and make it a reality from the commercial point of view”.

In this way, he showed teachers, students and the UdeC community in general how he has been able to work with non-conventional fibers for the construction industry, which is obtained from wood.

In the opportunity, among other topics, she deepened on the eucalyptus bark that works as the final product of a thermal insulation panel, showing the importance of daring to innovate.

In this sense, the professional pointed out that “it is important for creative minds that are thinking about something and sometimes do not know how to contribute. Maybe we can find some synergy, a collaboration, and also show that alone we cannot achieve much. You need to connect and others to see a development. Perhaps in the beginning there is the idea, very basic, but with time it matures and it is necessary to collaborate and make it known”.

Juan Pablo Silva, project engineer of the Los Angeles Innovation and Development Center, added that “we believe that in this period it is very necessary to start connecting, linking and creating the capacities of what would be the future Innovation and Development Center. And that is the objective of the talk, to be able to internalize the community about the areas of technological development of the center”.

Due to the above, a new talk is expected to be held in the first weeks of November, where the topic will be focused on data science.
