Hazardous chemical substances are those that, due to their quantity, concentration, chemical, physical or biological characteristics, can affect human health or cause harm to the environment or property. The Environment Department works on the management of hazardous substances, through measurements, diagnoses and assessments, to improve the environmental performance of companies.

Applying olfactometry techniques, which are a tool for quantification and regulation of odor emissions, unpleasant odor measurements are established from different industrial activities.

A noteworthy project is the Latin American diagnosis on the development of awareness processes and emergency planning in local communities, known as APELL, for its acronym in English. UDT was selected by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to conduct this study.
