Biomass is a renewable resource with a high potential for production of chemical compounds, materials and energy. In recent decades, the interest in developing technologies that allow an efficient and sustainable use of biomass has gained worldwide importance. Efforts are focused on replacing traditional, inefficient and high-environmental-impact use with more efficient conversion routes to obtain not only fuels but also intermediate products for the chemical and materials industries under the concept of a ‘biorefinery’.

In the national context, where forestry occupies a prominent place in Chile’s economy and the timber and pulp industry is well developed, use of residual biomass is of special relevance. Therefore, the Bioenergy Department is dedicated to the development of technologies to use biomass efficiently, both for fuels and chemicals and materials. We work on thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass with emphasis on both fast and slow pyrolysis, torrefaction, hydrothermal carbonization, gasification and co-combustion of coal and biomass. Another area of recent interest is the development of low-temperature thermal energy storage for applications in heating systems that enable efficient use of energy and the use of solar energy.

We are also performing studies for the public authorities on more efficient heating systems, (e.g., use of industrial residual heat for district heating in the Metropolitan area of Concepción, as a measure for reducing particulate matter emissions associated with additional benefits in energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gases). Over the last years, we made increasing efforts to transfer knowledge and reach the market with our processes and products. One example is the construction of a demonstration plant for producting of liquid smoke, an additive for the food industry, based on intermediate pyrolysis of domestic wood. A national company, leader in the production of food additives, is our partner in this project.

During the last two years, the Bioenergy Department has made important progress in process scale-up as well as the generation of scientific and technological knowledge. The incorporation of full-time investigators resulted in a significant increase in our fundamental research and the number and impact of our scientific publications.
