Agreement promotes the development of renewable energies

The Renewable Energy Center of Chile (CER) and the Technological Development Unit (UDT) of the Universidad de Concepcion signed on May 30 an agreement of cooperation and transfer of resources in the field of renewable energies.
The agreement aims to support capacity building to develop Non-Conventional Renewable Energies (NCRE) and encourage their development, providing tools for the evaluation of different medium and small-scale projects.

Dr. Cristina Segura, Head of the Bioenergy Department at UDT explains, “This agreement will encourage projects related to renewable energy sources. In addition, it will allow us to reveal the existing reality in different regions of the country”.

Project

En example of the work in NCRE at UDT is the SGNVproject that is developing a technology pioneer in Chile to include biogas from domestic and industrial waste in the current home network as a substitute for natural gas from fossil origin. This biogas could also be used as vehicle fuel. This initiative is originated from the results of a previous project, which generated a georeferenced database that determined the bioenergy potential of the Bio Bio Region for the production of biogas.

Currently, together with the Ministry of Energy, the purpose is to extend the analysis nationally, incorporating logistic and associative aspects for the generation and use of biogas as a source of renewable energies and developing the concept of self-sustainable bioenergy towns for Chile.

Courses

Thanks to this agreement, CER and UDT will carry out a series of courses throughout Chile during 2012, in order to present the options and possibilities with regard to NCRE.
